The dog was showing signs of uterine inertia, whereby it was unable to sustain uterine contractions sufficient to expel puppies. The dog was anesthetized and placed in lateral recumbency. A midline incision was made to expose the uterus. The two horns of the uterus were lifted through the incision. A short incision was made in each uterine horn to retrieve the puppies from the uterus. The uterus was then closed in a Utrecht pattern using dissolvable sutures. The body wall was closed in three layers, ending with the skin.
We would like to thank the Calera Animal Hospital in Alabama for allowing us to be present during this surgery.
Shania began to have an unusual discharge and was showing signs of early labor. With her due date still a week away we were quite concerned. We called the Calera Animal Hospital at 5 in the morning and rushed her into the emergency room immediately.
One puppy was already dead and Dr. Padgett speculated that the puppy probably dislodged from the uterine wall and was the cause of the early abortion. Little Blessing was barely breathing and and her prognosis was not good. Being she was a week early, Dr. Ellison and Dr. Padgett did not have high hopes for her survival.
Thanks to a great team of prayer warriors and Blessing has become a beautiful little girl full of life.
